A few older doorbells are still operated by 2 or 4 drycell batteries that provide either 3 or 6 volts. All doorbells formerly operated on this system, but only a few are still in operation.

Almost all doorbells or buzzers in use today operate on 10 volts.

Most modern door chimes operate on 16 volts.

Be sure the transformer you purchase with a doorbell, buzzer or chime is designed to provide the correct voltage for the chime, buzzer or doorbell you plan to install.

If you replace an old doorbell or buzzer with a new chime unit, you will usually have to replace the transformer also. This is necessary to make it conform to the required voltage output.
